OhioLINK Elsevier Hybrid Open Access Agreement

OhioLINK has signed a new open access (OA) publishing agreement with Elsevier.

OhioLINK's Elsevier hybrid journal open access publishing benefit is available to all institutions that participate in the Electronic Journal Center (EJC) [YES! Lourdes is part of this].

The agreement begins in January 2024 and continues for four years, through December 2027, and offers limited open access publishing benefits in eligible hybrid journals at no additional cost to OhioLINK institutions (with the exception of the Lancet and Cell journals).

There is a maximum number of articles that may be published open access under this agreement across all OhioLINK institutions.  This limit increases over the four years, from a relatively low cap in 2024 to a higher cap in 2027 in line with average publishing activity. The caps are: 750 articles in 2024, 1,072 articles in 2025, 1,607articles in 2026, increasing to 2,143 in 2027. It is expected that the article limits will be reached, particularly in the first year. This cap is divided among institutions based on a 3-year average of publishing data of OhioLINK corresponding authors in Elsevier's journals.

Prospective Authors

For authors, the ability to publish in Elsevier's hybrid open access journals at no charge is an opportunity to remove barriers to access and expand the reach of their research worldwide. Anyone will be able to read and benefit from the research, rather than only people who have subscription access to the specific journal in which the article is published

The following criteria will be used when approving articles for hybrid open access publishing under this deal:

  • The corresponding author must be affiliated with an OhioLINK institution participating in the EJC
  • Only articles to be published in hybrid journals are eligible; fully open access journals are excluded.
  • Eligible article types from any subject area are acceptable.
  • Article approval is on a “first come, first served” basis.
  • Articles accepted for publication after the limit has been reached will not be eligible for APC-free open access publishing.
  • The list price article publication charge (APC) for a particular journal is not considered.
